America votes! Trump wins second term as US president
Donald Trump has declared victory in the 2024 US election. With some votes still being counted, he currently leads with 277 electoral votes to Kamala Harris’s 244. Trump is projected to win across all seven battleground states, putting him on track to be the first Republican candidate in 20 years to win the popular vote – the last to do so was George W. Bush in 2004.
Analysts suggest that Americans voted largely on issues such as immigration and the economy, seeming to overlook the potential implications of Project 2025.
Trump rallies thousands in Michigan: ‘We will build American by American, we will hire American’
In a striking turn, a candidate who has been impeached for inciting violence against Congress, convicted of 34 felonies, and regarded as a threat by many in his own administration has prevailed over a historic bid for the first female president—a symbolic loss for women worldwide.
“We’ve achieved the most incredible political thing,” Trump said in his acceptance speech at Mar-a-Lago, Florida. “This will forever be remembered as the day the American people regained control of their country.”
In addition to the presidency, the Republicans have secured a Senate majority, and though the House of Representatives remains undecided, the potential impact of this election is substantial. With a Republican president, control of the Senate, and the possibility for Trump to appoint up to two Supreme Court justices, the ramifications of this election cycle could extend for decades.
Kamala Harris is set to address the results tonight. As the final numbers come in, many Americans are surprised by the high Republican turnout and are bracing for the consequences of one of the most intense and polarizing elections in recent history.
This election is not a repeat of 2016 and Trump is going to enter office with much more extreme plans for the future.
Stay tuned as we continue to follow this election and its profound global implications.
